Pitsligo Church (Old Pitsligo/Peathill Kirk, near Rosehearty) is a 17th-century parish kirk site, remembered locally as the “Visible Kirk” landmark for fishermen.
The old kirk’s fabric and carved features have been exposed to long-term weathering, making key elements—especially the distinctive bell-cot—vulnerable. Conservation work focused on protecting the most significant surviving architectural detail and supporting the wider historic kirkyard setting.
A key intervention was the restoration of the richly ornate bell-cot (dated 1635) as part of Aberdeenshire’s Historic Kirkyards Project in 2003.
The site is valued not only for the kirk itself, but for its remarkable burial ground—around 145 recumbent tablestones with outstanding craftsmanship—making it an important record of local history and memorial art. Restoring and protecting standout features like the bell-cot helps keep this heritage legible and safer for long-term stewardship.
