Lews Castle is a 19th-century castle overlooking Stornoway, restored to house Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean alongside visitor facilities.
After a period of decline, Lews Castle became the focus of a major regeneration to secure its future and bring it back into public use. The project combined the restoration of the historic building with a new, purpose-built museum and archive facility in the castle grounds.
The redevelopment paired conservation of the castle with a modern extension for Museum & Tasglann nan Eilean, which opened on 14 July 2016. Alongside the heritage works, parts of the building were adapted to support ongoing use and sustainability (including accommodation), creating a long-term viable future for the site.
The restoration protects a landmark building and creates a dedicated home for Outer Hebrides heritage—museum galleries for “islands and islanders” and an accessible public archive service based on site. It also strengthens cultural tourism and learning by making collections and research facilities easier to access.
