The Aith Market Cross is a historic landmark marking the centre of community and civic life in Aith.
The Ramsay Garden sundial is a carved cherub/half-angel holding a shield-shaped wall sundial dated 1892, with a Greek inscription and the Burns line “It’s coming yet for a’ that.”
A conservation-led approach focuses on a close condition survey, gentle cleaning to reduce harmful deposits, and careful repointing/patch repairs with compatible materials to limit water ingress. Where appropriate, missing or damaged functional elements (the dial’s gnomon is noted as missing) can be addressed without altering the original carved fabric.
The sundial is a small but distinctive piece of Ramsay Garden’s Arts-and-Crafts detailing and part of what makes the building’s external storytelling so memorable. Preserving it protects irreplaceable carved detail and keeps the inscriptions legible as part of Edinburgh’s historic townscape.
